Konstfrämjandet Norrbotten är glada att kunna tillkännage Aude Christel Mgba och Bruno Alves de Almeida som konstnärliga ledare för 2024 års upplaga av Luleåbiennalen med arkitektur och konst som övergripande tema.
Mgba och Alves de Almeida har samarbetat sedan 2018 då de deltog i De Appel Curatorial Program i Amsterdam. De delar ett djupt intresse och erfarenhet av att inkludera olika offentliga platser som en förlängning av utställningsrummet. Urvalsjuryn ser hur duon kan ge nya perspektiv på frågor som just nu formar regionen. Dessutom visar deras tidigare projekt på innovativa sätt att närma sig det platsspecifika och transdisciplinära, och sammankopplingar mellan det lokala och det globala.
Aude Christel Mgba (f. 1991, Kamerun) är curator och konsthistoriker baserad i Kamerun och Nederländerna. Mgba engagerar sig i dekoloniala perspektiv genom forskningsprojekt och skapandet av plattformar för överföring, översättning och förkroppsligande av tidigare generationers kunskaper. I hennes curatoriska praktik ingår samarbeten som genom sina sammansättningar och utformningar ifrågasätter förhållningssätt kring att skapa och visa konst vilka traditionellt ofta centreras kring konstutövare och konstinstitutioner. Mgba är intresserad av samarbeten som sträcker sig bortom dessa rum, för att inkludera fler.
Bruno Alves de Almeida (f. 1987, Brasilien/Portugal) är curator och arkitekt baserad i Nederländerna, för närvarande curator för Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, och lärare vid Designhögskolan i Eindhoven. Alves de Almeidas praktik är rotad i transdisciplinärt tänkande som tillsammans med plats- och kontextspecifika förutsättningar, resulterar i projekt som förhåller sig till dagsaktuella frågeställningar och utforskar alternativa former och utrymmen för konstnärliga upplevelser.
Mgba och Alves de Almeida blir de första konstnärliga ledarna i biennalens historia som är baserade utanför Sverige.
Luleåbiennalen 2024 med det övergripande temat arkitektur och konst, äger rum mellan 2 mars–26 maj 2024 och kommer därmed att sträcka sig över den period då den mest dramatiska förändringen i det norrbottniska landskapet sker – från att vara täckt av is och snö blir den till barmark. Förutsättningarna har undersökts i tidigare upplagor av biennalen genom att växla mellan sommar- och vinterutställning perioder, men aldrig under en enda biennal. Skiftet verkar särskilt viktigt för en biennal som handlar om förhållandet mellan arkitektur och samtidskonst, och lyfter fram relaterade aspekter av det sociala livet i både den offentliga sfären och hemmet.

Aude Christel Mgba and Bruno Alves de Almeida have been appointed Artistic Directors for Luleåbiennalen 2024
Konstfrämjandet Norrbotten is pleased to announce that Aude Christel Mgba and Bruno Alves de Almeida have been selected as Artistic Directors for the Luleåbiennalen 2024 with the overarching theme of architecture and art.
Mgba and Alves de Almeida have collaborated since 2018 when they took part in the De Appel Curatorial Programme 2018-19 in Amsterdam. They share a profound interest and experience in working beyond the exhibition space and in diverse public spaces. The review panel considered the duo as curators who will bring new perspectives to questions that are currently shaping the region. Furthermore, their previous projects demonstrated innovative ways of approaching the site-specific and transdisciplinary, while connecting the local with the global.
Aude Christel Mgba (b.1991, Cameroon) is an independent curator and art historian based between Cameroon and the Netherlands. Aude engages with decoloniality through research projects and the creation of platforms that aim to transcribe, translate, and embody ancestral knowledge. Her curatorial experiences include collaborations that question forms of making and showing art which tend to be centered between art institutions and art workers. She is more interested in collaborations that expand beyond these spaces to embrace other communities.
Bruno Alves de Almeida (b.1987, Brazil/ Portugal) is a curator and architect based in the Netherlands, currently active as curator of the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, and tutor at the Design Academy Eindhoven. His practice is rooted in transdisciplinary thinking and site/context-specificity, resulting in projects responding to timely issues and going beyond customary formats and spaces for the presentation and experience of artistic practice.
Mgba and Alves de Almeida will be the first Artistic Directors in the biennial history based outside of Sweden.
Luleåbiennalen 2024 with the overarching theme architecture and art, takes place between March 2–May 26 and will thereby span over the period when the most dramatic shift in the North Bothnian landscape occurs – going from covered in ice and snow to bare ground. The conditions have been explored in earlier editions of the biennial by alternating between summer and winter exhibition periods, but never in a single biennial. The shift seems particularly important for a biennial that deals with the relationship between architecture and contemporary art, highlighting related aspects of social life in both the public sphere and the home.
